IBM System/390 S/N 02-48515

This System/390 Multiprise 2003 was donated by the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.

There are some March 12, 1998 date codes in the cabinet, so that is probably near the manufacturing date.

The machine is in the same family as the IBM 360 and 370 mainframe systems, and was first introduced in 1996. It will run the VM/ESA, VSE/ESA and OS/390 operating systems, as well as Linux.

It contains the following boards:

UPC QL60, P/N 40H9341, Universal Power Card

MEM QX43, P/N 60H0836, 256 MB Memory

PU QX30, P/N 60H0883, Processor

CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

QD92 ENTR, P/N 47H0244, OSA-2 Ethernet/Token Ring, 2x LAN connections, either 10Mb Ethernet or 4/16 Mb Token RingThere are big battery packs in the front and back of the system that provide enough power for a graceful shutdown when the AC power fails.

We received a 3422 A01 tape drive with the system, and have been offered 2 3490 tape drives and a 3174 controller.

We need to get the Support Element (a glorified PC running OS/2) for this system, or assemble one ourselves. We also need a lot of files for the Support Element that enable the features on this system.

It is about the size of a large refrigerator.

This card cage for the Bulk Power Assembly is at the front top of the cabinet.

The 3-phase AC for the system enters from the left.

The 380VDC goes to the battery packs through the cables at the right.

This logic cage for the Central Processing Complex (CPC) is at the front middle of the cabinet.

There are two DC-DC converter modules to the left of this image.

From left to right we have:

  • UPC QL60, P/N 40H9341, Universal Power Card

  • MEM QX43, P/N 60H0836, 256 MB Memory

  • PU QX30, P/N 60H0883, Processor

  • CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

  • CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

  • CH3P QL40, P/N 60H0391, Parallel Channels Module, 3x External Bus&Tag ports

  • Three filler panels

  • QD92 ENTR, P/N 47H0244, Ethernet/Token Ring

This card cage for the DASD is at the rear middle of the cabinet.

The system has room for 32 9 or 18 MB SCSI drives.

This system had 16 drives, but we can't get the drives because of the sensitive data that they contained.
